First acts revealed for Oban Live 2017

(special collaboration for Oban Live)

Argyll’s biggest live music concert, Oban Live, has today announced the first six acts confirmed for the event on June 2 and 3 next year.

Glasgow’s Roddy Hart and the Lonesome Fire will take to the stage to perform tracks from their newly released album Swithering, an album co-produced by admired Scottish producer Paul Savage (Mogwai, Emma Pollock, Admiral Fallow). Since releasing their eponymous album in late 2013, the band has been named International Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the Scottish Variety Awards and also played a five-night residency on The Late Late Show in the US which reached over 12 million viewers.

Also on the line-up is Admiral Fallow, a band formed in 2007 by five Glasgow-based students of music. They released their adored debut album, Boots Met My Face, in 2011 and its widely-acclaimed successor, Tree Bursts In Snow, the following year. Their extraordinary third record, Tiny Rewards, has received many plaudits since its release in May 2015.

Tiree born Skipinnish and Irish quartet We Banjo 3 are back by popular demand. Feedback from the 2016 Oban Live survey revealed the two bands as the audiences’ top favourites. It’s been a big year for We Banjo 3. Their latest record String Theory went straight to Billboard World number 1. They also played for President Obama on Capitol Hill. Meanwhile, last year’s Friday night headliners, Skipinnish, have been busy working on their new album due for release next year. The band is well known for their combination of traditional Highland and contemporary sounds.

Skerryvore return to get the audience jumping to their unique fusion of traditional music and urban sounds of rock, pop and funk. The band has become an international sensation since forming in Tiree in 2005, selling over 54,000 albums to date. The audience will be treated to tracks from the group’s new album, due for release in 2017.

Oban locals Ceol an Aire and The Argyll Ceilidh Trail will join forces to open the show on Friday June 2, 2017. Ceol an Aire was formed seven years ago following the success of the first Argyll Ceilidh Trail. This one-off team are currently getting to work on some new songs and sets that are sure to kick Oban Live off with a blast.

Early bird tickets, with a 25% discount off regular ticket prices, go on sale to the general public at 12pm, Saturday December 3 for a limited time only. Those hoping to buy early bird tickets are advised to get in early as the offer is whilst tickets last.

The remaining headline acts and dates for the full ticket release will be announced early next year.

Grammy Award-nominated songstress, KT Tunstall, has been announced as the headline act at Oban Live, with quintessential celtic-rockers Wolfstone and London-based quartet Hunter and the Bear completing the already stellar line-up!

daily line-up

Trad superstars Capercaillie, Julie Fowlis, Skipinnish and many more also feature on the concert’s bill, which has already seen 1500 early bird tickets sell out in under three hours.

General tickets go on sale 12 noon on Saturday 13 February via www.obanlive.com or from www.eventbrite.co.uk.

Oban Live’s inception came about after the hugely successful ‘Decade’ concert, held in Oban in May 2015, generated an incredible £1.1 million for the town and its surrounding areas.  The concert, which celebrated the 10th anniversary of Skerryvore, saw international acts attract crowds from across the world to attend.  Artistic director and Skerryvore band member, Daniel Gillespie, saw the huge potential for an open-air concert in Oban and, as a result, Oban Live was born.

The economic impact of the concert is expected to be double that of Decade and organisers have already had to arrange additional capacity at Mossfield Park to cope with demand.

Daniel Gillespie, Oban Live Artistic Director, said: “We are absolutely delighted to announce KT Tunstall as our headline act at Oban Live.  She is an iconic musician who has been flying the flag for Scotland for many years around the world.  Oban has hosted incredible music events in the past year – including our own Decade event and The Royal National Mod – and we want to continue to celebrate this town’s wonderful community spirit and incredible atmosphere with an event that will welcome people from all over the world to Oban for a weekend of sensational live music.  With the early bird tickets selling out so quickly we advise people to book tickets early to avoid missing out. See you all in May!”
Oban Live is supported by EventScotland, part of the VisitScotland Events Directorate.

Paul Bush OBE, Director of Events for VisitScotland, said: “We are delighted to be supporting the inaugural Oban Live through our National Funding Programme. This exciting addition to Oban’s existing portfolio of music events, with its impressive line-up of Trad and international pop artists, will no doubt attract visitors to the town from the local area and further afield.”

Tunstall shot to fame when her debut album Eye to the Telescope earned her a nomination for the Mercury Prize. She later went on to win awards for Best British Live Act and Best Breakthrough Act at 2006 BRIT Awards, then later adding the Ivor Novello Award for Best Song to her trophy cabinet with hit song Suddenly I See.

1500 early bird tickets have sold out in under 3 hours! Many thanks to all those who have secured their 2 day ticket.
Details of remaining tickets (including day tickets) will be announced soon along with the Headline act of Oban Live 2016! Can’t wait to see you all in May!
